Stephen Brown – Musicians Union

Stephen Brown is the Musicians’ Union Regional Organiser for the Midlands, covering both East and West of the region. He is responsible for overseeing the music industry end of business for musicians, their employment and contractual rights, and the organising programme run by the union on his patch. He has been an active trade unionist for some 30 years both in the public and private sector during his gigging years.

Musically, Stephen is originally from Birmingham and cut his teeth as a guitarist on the local music scene in the late 70’s and 80’s. Following that experience, and as a songwriter fronting his own folk rock band, he toured the UK and abroad playing to audiences and supporting name acts both in local venues and at large festivals, as well as headlining shows in his own right. He has also contributed to music fanzines, produced and recorded albums, and been a tour manager for Gut Records, so understanding what gigging and aspiring musicians go through to sort and play gigs as well as develop their career.

Stephen has taken a very DIY approach to creating music and brings that ethos, along with his trade unionist philosophy, to the table.
